Truckers Insurance

Independent truck drivers who contract themselves out to motor carriers are almost always covered by company trucking insurance while employed, but independents need truckers insurance for the times they are not covered by a motor carrier.

Usually, motor carriers can simply call their insurance company to add drivers they hire to their portfolio of commercial truck insurance policies.

However, this coverage only lasts as long as the driver works for the motor carrier and only during the times they are commissioned or operating under the motor carrier’s authority.

To protect your livelihood and comply with the law by having proper truckers insurance during the times you aren’t operating under a motor carrier’s authority, you’ll need to purchase bobtail insurance, deadhead insurance or non-trucking liability.

Bobtail Insurance

Bobtail insurance, non-trucking liability insurance and deadhead insurance all refer to the same type of truckers insurance coverage. They’re essentially commercial trucking insurance policies designed specifically to cover the independent truck driver during all the times that they’re not technically under the truck insurance of a motor carrier.

Usually “under dispatch” includes performing their haul and driving to and from the job site—bobtail insurance covers the truck during activities such as washing, conducting maintenance, or driving recreationally. It also would cover the driver if he were to perform an independent haul for a party with no insurance.

What Independent Truckers Insurance May Not Cover
While they are commissioned, independent truckers are covered by the truck insurance of the motor carriers who hired them. The motor carrier should file claims with their truck insurance providers for any accidents that occur while independents are under their dispatch.

Other Truckers Insurance Policies for Owner/Operators
It’s always a good idea to pair comprehensive coverage with any primary commercial trucking liability insurance. Comprehensive insurance coverage protects against damages that occur to your own vehicle while not commissioned. It can also help ensure your equipment is covered in the case of damage should a motor carrier’s policy not contain provisions to protect you.
