NHTSA

NHTSA, or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, is a governing agency that is part of the Department of Transportation.  Its self-described mission is to “save lives, prevent injuries, reduce vehicle-related crashes.”

The NHTSA is important to the trucking industry because its main responsibilities include setting and enforcing standards in manufacturing for vehicle theft-resistance, fuel economy, environmental emissions and crash safety.

The NHTSA also maintains records from accidents and violations in order to draw relevant conclusions related to highway traffic and safety from data analysis.

The NHTSA is basically the major governing body in determining environmental and safety standards for all vehicles on the road, including commercial trucks. 

It’s important to note, however, that in the year 2000 the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, or FMCSA was created in order to regulate the U.S. commercial trucking industry more directly.
