Truck Insurance Rates and FMCSA

Truck insurance rates are probably the last thing on the FMCSA’s mind when they institute new safety programs, but FMCSA regulations can have a large indirect effect on the industry.

Commercial trucking is highly regulated for good reason.  Over 45,000 deaths occur each year in motor vehicle related accidents and it is estimated that up to 9 percent of those accidents involve commercial trucks.

It is therefore the responsibility of several government and private agencies to make sure that roads and highways are safe for all drivers, including truck drivers.  The United States Department of Transportation has established several of these agencies, such as the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, or FMCSA. Truck Insurance Rates: Will CSA 2010 Affect Commercial Trucking Insurance prices?

It is estimated that up to 45,000 deaths occur each year as a result of traffic accidents.  Up to 9 percent of those accidents are said to involve commercial trucks and other commercial vehicles.  It is important to note, however, that less than 20 percent of those accidents are reported to be caused by the commercial truck drivers.

Statistics such as these should be noted when insurance providers in the commercial truck insurance industry decide to alter the cost of commercial trucking insurance rates.  As of now, insurers have a flawed program called CSA 2010 to provide them with data that affects individual’s insurance rates. Blimpie subs, a franchise commonly found within Petro truck stops, describes their favorite Meatball Parmigiana as a sandwich that contains “Italian beef/pork blended meatballs smothered in a zesty marinara sauce with melted provolone and sprinkled with parmesan.”

With a similar reverence, Overdrive Magazine is reporting that truckers surveyed across the country have voted Petro Truck Stops their “favorite truck stop” of 2010.

The magazine has run their independent study of truck drivers across the U.S. for the past four years and Petro has been ringing up top rankings for the entire span. (more…)

Some truckers are beginning to worry a new law that publishes safety violations of trucking companies might cost lots of American truck drivers possible jobs.

As a commercial truck insurance company, we know better than anyone just how regulated the industry is. In the midst of a recession where paying truck insurance premiums are the least of most truckers problems, a lot of drivers are worried these new ratings regulations couldn’t have come at a worse time. Commercial truck insurance seems like an awfully specific term, but anyone who works in the trucking industry and is required to hold some type of truck insurance policies by law knows that it is a very, very general term—the fact is, there are hundreds of different kinds of commercial truck insurance, each extremely specialized to the type of truck being insured and its function.

Dump truck insurance is one of the largest categories of commercial truck insurance specialization, probably due to the very different capacities dump trucks are used, the very specific types of cargo dump trucks carry and the different variations of dump trucks themselves. (more…)

People sometimes ask us “what’s the difference between non-trucking liability insurance and bobtail insurance, and which one do I need?” We’re always happy to answer that question. Non-trucking liability insurance and bobtail insurance are the same thing. They are simply different terms for the same coverage.

When a driver is off the clock, or not hauling any cargo, coverage is still needed to protect both you and your bobtail, hence the name (more…)

At Royalty Truck Insurance, we understand that finding commercial truck insurance that fits your needs exactly can be challenging, but unless you’re ready to pay too much annually for truck insurance or you’re prepared to risk your rig and operator’s license in the event of an accident, it’s a must!

Finding the right truck insurance can be difficult because there are so many specializations in the world of commercial truck insurance.  The specialties exist for a few reasons.  Largely because commercial trucks are used in such varying capacities, and largely because the federal and state governments dictate coverage amounts to protect people from the capacities commercial trucks are used. (more…)

At Royalty Truck Insurance, we provide lots of commercial truck insurance for tow trucks throughout most of the United States.  That said, we’d like to take the opportunity to spend a few paragraphs to salute these fine creations.

Hail the tow truck, quite possibly the best vehicular metaphor for human existence and the perfect ying-yang in the world of commercial trucks (and commercial truck insurance for that matter). (more…)

Royalty Truck Insurance is pleased to announce that we’re now fully operational to offer commercial truck insurance in North Dakota! Yes, that’s right, we continue to expand our areas of expertise to cover more of the continental United States.

We must say, we learned a lot getting licensed to sell truck insurance in North Dakota—much more than just the ins and outs of commercial truck insurance regulations of the state.

We also learned that Cambridge University thinks that North Dakota is the friendliest state in the Union, based on an official study they conducted. We’re still not sure if the study was based on manners or crime rates, but either way, it’s pretty cool if you ask us! (more…)

It’s the law: you have to be covered with the proper amounts of commercial truck insurance and relevant cargo insurance whichever state you happen to be hauling in.  We know that big truck insurance varies greatly for fleets and trucking companies depending on the capacity of the trucks and materials they haul.

But what’s the best way for independent owner/operators to know they’re always carrying the proper general liability coverage amounts? (more…)
